Whoo boy, it's been a long time since this site has been updated, huh? Well, in case you didn't hear, Juxtaposers is now in a long distance relationship, as Bill has moved to Jackson, Mich., and Jim is once again calling North Carolina home. So that happened.
That doesn't mean we're not still doing shows, though. In fact, this weekend we're having a Belated, Last-Minute CD Release Show. Yeah, why plan in advance? And since Jim is back in town, it will be a Jim's Myth reunion, too. Check the shows page for details.

CD sales are going well, folks. Thanks to everyone that's bought one. We're having our first CD release party on Saturday at The Oasis coffeehouse just south of Lexington. Also, the CD is now available at two area stores, Weekends in Lexington and Music Station in St. Clair. All the details are on our Myspace blog. We're still geeked about the whole thing. Can you tell? Also, our shows page is finally updated.
July 23, 2007
Hey, did you see the news at the top of the page there? The CD is done. I know! Holy crap! Five hundred copies arrived on Thursday, and we've started selling them. They look gorgeous (thanks to the photography of Ryan's parents and the fine folks at Nationwide Disc, who manufactured it for a very reasonable price). And we've been getting lots of compliments from the people who have heard it, so apparently it sounds OK. We're asking $15 a CD, for the time being at least. We're working on setting up an account so you can order them online. We'll also be putting them in some local stores and organizing some CD release shows. In the meantime, if you can't wait any longer, drop us an e-mail and we'll see how we can get one in your hot little hands. Oh, and there's a lengthy discussion of all the tracks on the CD here. Thanks for sticking by us. Our sophomore CD should be out in late 2016.
Jan. 9 , 2007
OK, so clearly we didn't get the CD ready in time for Christmas. Um, sorry? But guess what, we're REALLY REALLY going to try to have it done in time for March 3. Why March 3, you ask? March 3 is a very important day because we have convinced the greatest band in the known universe, Great Lakes Myth Society, to return to Port Huron for a triumphant encore performance with us and Northern Whiskey Syndicate. Even if this doesn't turn out to be a Juxtaposers CD release show, it would be really, really swell if each and every person who reads this came out to the Huron Athletic Club that night to prove to the boys in GLMS that we're awesome and that PoHo is capable of supporting a night of great, original music. Stay tuned.
Also, all us songwriters in the band have ben hard at work writing some really, really good new songs the last few months. We probably have a whole second CD's worth of great new material that will be ready for release sometime in 2019. Some of the demos are posted on our Myspace page, though, and would be downloadable if Myspace's music player wasn't a worthless piece of crap. We'll be playing as many of them as possible at this show with GLMS.
Oh, and for our friends in metro Detroit, we've got another show at the New Way Bar in Ferndale on March 2. This one's on a Friday, so no excuses.
Sept. 24 , 2006
Have we really not added any news here since April? Well, then, it will be news to everyone that visits this site that the longer-than-long-awaited debut Juxtaposers CD, Martinis & Day-Old Doughnuts, is finished! Well, it's not finished, but we've finished recording it. We still need to finish mastering it and finish figuring out how the heck we're going to pay for it. But the new ETA for the finished product is late November/early December. Yes, it will be here in time for Christmas ... hopefully.
What else is new? Oh, we have a fourth member. Jim Smith has been playing dobro with us for ... months now. We've also formed a sort-of-side project, Tumble Home, that adds former Pixie Dix bassist Amy Proctor to the line-up. AND we're about to have our "big city" debut; we'll be playing in Ferndale on Oct. 5 with our buddies in Northern Whiskey Syndicate and some band from Cincinatti called 500 Miles to Memphis that the NWS guys assure us is amazing.
Also, we have a Myspace page now. We sometimes do a better job of updating it than this site, so check it out and be our friend.
April 18, 2006
OK, OK, OK, the Web site is updated! Sorry! Geez! The "shows" page is as accurate as possible for the time being. Check it out. We already have a lot of shows lined up for the summer.
Thanks to everybody who showed up for the big video shoot at the Roche Bar on April 1 for Bill's application to the Rolling Stone/MTV reality show. We got some fantastic footage, of which about 30 seconds was used in the final DVD. But we have a lot more on tape, which -- if we ever figure out how to do it -- we could hypothetically post on the Web site. No word yet from MTV, however the deadline for the application has been pushed back to April 21, which means they probably didn't get enough quality applicants by April 7 ... which is either really good news for Bill or really bad news for Bill. We'll keep you posted.
Feb. 4, 2006
Happy New Year, everybody! OK, so we're already one month into 2006 (!). We had a super busy January, and February is shaping up to be a humdinger, too. Have you visited the bio page lately? Have you noticed we have a DRUMMER now? Welcome Nate Dauphinais to the group. He'll be playing with us at most of our shows, as you're probably already aware if you've been to any of our shows since November.
The big show we've got coming up is our very special, anti-Valentine's Day show, The Heartbroken Winter Special. It's actually on V-Day at MainStreet Live in Port Huron. We know, it's a Tuesday night. But it will be worth it. The groups on the bill (us, Pixie Dix, The Acrobat and maybe just maybe an appearance by Chad Nicefield of Heirs) will be playing nothing but breakup tunes and songs of heartache. We're learning a bunch of new material for this show, so hopefully someone shows up for it. If you want a flyer, you can download it here. Print some out and hang some up somewhere. You just became a member of our street team! Congrats.
CD update: Man, we will finish this thing. We're close. Just two more tracks to record. In the meantime, Jim Williams of Lost Cuzzins recorded our live set at the Upper Level Acoustic Cafe on Jan. 28, so have a live album of sorts. If there's interest, we may burn a couple copies and sell them for a buck or two at our shows until the actual album is done. Let us know if you want one.
Dec. 15, 2005
OK, OK, OK, we finally updated the shows page. Please note: We are no longer playing at the Raven Coffeehouse on Friday. We are instead at Quay Street Brewing Co. with our good friends, Pixie Dix. We've been hanging out a lot with these guys lately and have even formed a supergroup/hybrid (we like to call it Dixtaposers) for a few songs. Expect to hear them on Friday as well as our New Year's Eve show at the Roche. Oh, and we were flattered to have Heirs ask us to open for them at their CD release party on Dec. 28. Heirs is amazing, fully deserving of fame and fortune in the recording industry. Don't even bother coming to this show for us. Come to hear their new tunes and marvel at their talent. They actually called us "the best fucking band on the planet" on their Myspace page annoucing the show! Um, the best band except for you guys, right? Flattered.
Oct. 23, 2005
We'll we've slipped a little in the old Web site maintenance department. More overhauls are on the way, including lots of new photos, but in the meantime at least the shows and music pages are up-to-date again. Only one show on the horizon at the moment. As for music, for those of you who didn't get the e-mail, three of our songs are now downloadable. They are rough, unmixed versions of songs that will be on our album. Yes, the album is still happening. Great strides have been made and at least nine songs are in this rough, mostly finished format. We're looking at recording another two, mixing it, mastering it and then it's DONE. It's possible we'll have CDs in hand before 2006, ... but I wouldn't count on it.
Thanks to everyone that came to the Great Lakes Myth Society show last month. A great time was had by all, and there's been much interest from bands and fans alike in doing it again. We'll work on it.
Enjoy the new "fun stuff" entry, a very special Juxtaposers glossary compiled by Ryan's mom.
Sept. 6, 2005
Short update, here. Thumbfest was a blast. If you missed it, you missed the most rip-snortin' version of This Land is Your Land ever.
We're a part of a few upcoming Hurricane Katrina benefits. Details on the first are on the shows page. Details on the second are coming soon.
Ryan continues to break strings left and right. Bill's accordion is living with his parents for a few weeks while we attempt to locate a repair shop to give it a good refurbishing. It should -- no, it must -- be done in time for the GLMS show on Sept. 24.
Come to that show or you'll never forgive yourself for missing it.
That is all.
Aug. 29, 2005
Well, the Curse of August continues. Ryan and Bill have broken more strings this last month than in our previous two years playing together. Then a plague of insects decided to descend on our performance in Port Sanilac on Saturday, understandably driving off the majority of our audience. Big kudos to all our hardcore fans for sticking it out. Big kudos also are in order for our pals in The Acrobat, who have let us borrow their P.A. for two shows now.
There's a bunch of updates. Look around and see if you can find them. And make sure you come to Thumbfest this weekend. You've got three whole chances to see your pals, the Juxtaposers. And it won't be August anymore, so hopefully an asteroid won't smash us all to pieces.
Aug. 14, 2005
Well, this weekend was ... interesting. Be very careful while navigating this Web site because a bee might sting you in the eye or your testicals may fall off, because apparently there is a curse on your pals, the Juxtaposers. More specifically, a curse on Bill. He was attacked by a glass tip jar that decided to bust into pieces and gash his left hand all to hell mere seconds before taking the stage -- it was actually just some pieces of plywood on the grass -- at theYale Music Festival. The MC had just introduced us, saying, "Here they are, the Juxtaposers!" and suddenly there was blood. Oh, the humanity.
Well we managed to do a shortened set, nevertheless. And Bill superglued his wounds together for our show on Sunday in front of five people at Goodells County Park. People just don't get out to support Juvenile Diabetes research, I guess. Nevertheless, we had a good time -- really -- and supported a couple of worthy causes.
Enjoy the updates. We now have all of our lyrics online and many new additions to the Songwriting Hall of Fame. Flyers are circulating for the fantabulous show on Sept. 24 with Great Lakes Myth Society. Look for them on a bulletin board or liquor store window near you.
Aug. 8, 2005
Well, we're in the middle of our summer tour, with dates in Yale, Port Sanilac and all points in between. Thanks to everybody that's been coming out to all of our shows lately -- especially the Boat Night experiment that went so swimmingly. It means a lot.
So keep checking the shows page. (Note the time has changed for the show in Yale this Saturday.) Also photos from Boat Night and additions to the Songwriting Hall of Fame have been added.
July 6, 2005
Holy cow, guys guys guys, it finally happened. Juxtaposers has put the finishing touches on two of the songs for our upcoming album, and they're online in mp3 form for your listening enjoyment. You never thought it would happen, did you? We set up one of them thar Pure Volume accounts to post the music, so you'll want to go there to start streaming.
July 1, 2005
Got another exciting concert to announce. Juxtaposers will be playing on the front steps of the Times Herald on Boat Night (July 22). That would be exciting enough, but just wait until you hear the rest of the lineup we've got planned: The Acrobat ... With Rescue Breathing ... e'widget. Three of the finest bands the area has to offer ... and us. Make sure you at least stop by and listen for a few minutes if you're going to be partying it up downtown.
Also, the Songwriting Hall of Fame is now online. Check it out and make a nomination.
June 9, 2005
And now ... the moment you've all been
waiting for .... Juxtaposers are proud to
present: the show we've been trying to set
up for months now! Yes, we finally can
confirm that the one, the only Great
Lakes Myth Society will be
performing in Port Huron on Sept. 24 at
MainStreet Live. This show is going to
rock harder than any show in Port Huron
has ever rocked before, and we're
including Bon Jovi at McMorran in 1985 in
that statement. Mark your calendars now.
If you only go to one Juxtaposers show all
year, this is the one. In addition to
ourselves and the
greatest band to ever emerge from the
Lower Penninsula, we've also got
Northern
Whiskey Syndicate on board. In short,
this show will redefine the meaning of
folk-rock and blow that wussie Byrds shit
out of the freaking ocean.
Sorry, we're excited.
Tell your friends. We need a lot of
people to show up.
May 30, 2005
Well, lately we've hit a few snags with
our two big projects, namely, our CD and
our first attempt at setting up a
multi-band show in Port Huron, but things
are once again looking up on both fronts.
We were in Rich's studio yesterday laying
down tracks for Griswold Street.
One more good session and we should be
able to throw together a four- or
five-song demo, which would allow us to
(a) get gigs in Detroit, (b) give all you
fans a preview of the full-length album,
and (c) finally put some music online. As
for the show, we should be able to
finalize everything and formally announce
it later this week.
One reason we've been such slackers is
we have been performing a whole bunch. The
show on May 7 at MainStreet Live was
especially memorable. Thanks to all Bill's
mom's friends who made the trip for the
show. We also enjoyed chatting with the
night's two comedians, Brian Archer and
Mimi Gonzalez. Brian enjoyed us so much he
mentioned us on his
Web site, so we're returning the
favor. And here's Mimi's
site, too, because she's damn
funny.
We'll be performing outside during the
Be a Tourist in Your Own Town festivities
on Saturday, once at the MainStreet Port
Huron Welcome Center and once at the Huron
Lightship, so make like a tourist and
wander on down.
Finally, in the interest of making this
site at least marginally interactive, Bill
has plans for a few new features. Going
online today is the Top
10 Albums page. Enjoy.
April 3, 2005
Whoo doggies! Our schedule is quickly
filling up. Lots of opportunities for you
to see the ol' Juxtaposers live in the
coming weeks and months. Check the shows
page for all the details. Also, there are
a few more photos posted from our recent
MainStreet Live appearances.
Speaking of which, we sincerely
apologize to whomever the headlining
comedian was at our last show there on
March 19. For those of you who weren't
present, we were morons and didn't move
our equipment far enough from the stage
until it was too late. When we had to
leave, he totally took us to town for
disrupting his act. He reportedly said:
"The Juxtaposers, ladies and gentlemen.
Maybe next time their parents will let
them stay out late." Ouch! He didn't have
to be quite such a jerk about it, but it
was pretty a bone-headed move on our part
and we won't let it happen again. We can't
feel too bad, though, because it sounds
like we gave him some great material.
In recording news , we haven't done
much in the past couple weeks because of
scheduling issues, but we're hoping to get
back in the studio this week to record a
couple more tracks. We promise, as soon as
we have one finalized, we'll post it
online. It may be a while, though. Thanks
for your patience. Peace out.
March 13, 2005
Much is new on Ye Olde Web Syte.
Updated shows. New photos from Saturday's
show during the Pub Crawl. OK, I guess
there's not that much that's new. But we
do wish to extend major thanks to all our
fans who braved the teeming masses of
green-clad drunkards and also to all the
green-clad drunkards who took a few
seconds to listen and offer slurred words
of encouragement. Seemed like a good time
was had by all.
Feb. 24, 2005
Lyrics for our newest song, Scottish
Meatballs, are posted in the music
section. There's a long, involved story
behind this song that involves a costume
party and mass quantities of rye whiskey,
but the short version is we both like to
shout stuff in Scottish accents and this
song gives us that opportunity. We'll be
singing that and other Celtic-themed songs
when we perform on March 12 at MainStreet
Live during the CelticFest Pub Crawl (see
"Shows").
We have another new song in the works:
Murder Ballad No. 2 (Requiem for
Jessica), another tale of cruel death
Bill wrote based on true events. Look for
its public debut in the near future.
Also, we are scheduled to begin
recording tonight. If all goes well, we
could have music to post online in the
next couple of weeks. Stay tuned.
One more thing: One of our absolute
favorite bands, Great
Lakes Myth Society, is having its CD
release party on March 10 at the Blind Pig
in Ann Arbor. If you live in Michigan, it
would be well worth your time to
investigate this band and attend the show.
Trust us.
Feb. 6, 2005
Welcome to the new and improved front
page. Hope you enjoy it. Also new photos
posted in the photo section.
Feb. 5, 2005
Thanks to everyone who has braved wind
and snow and cold to come out to our shows
recently. We've got a few more coming up.
Details are posted in the shows section
(now with showt imes!).
In other news, we've taken some actual
first steps making our first a CD! Don't
get too too too excited. We haven't
actually recorded anything yet. But we
have started talking to Rich Cox of Port
Huron's own Chop Shop about the process
and have formulated a plan. We hope to
start recording in the next couple of
weeks and will perhaps have a finished CD
by the end of spring. Yay! |
